Health & physical Education Courses

 

Traditional Physical Education - Healthy Active Living Education PPL 1O / PPL1OU (French Immersion - Co-Ed) may be run as Outdoor Education / PPL 2O / PPL 3O / PPL 4O

These courses touch on a variety of sports, fitness and health topics, including: field sports, court sports, yoga, strength training, team skills, healthy eating, relationships, mental health, basic anatomy, first aid and CPR.

 

Grade 9 Healthy Living and Personal Fitness Activities - Recreation and Fitness Activities PAF1O (Co-Ed)

This course is an alternative to our traditional grade 9 sport-based credit. The focus will be on personal fitness, recreation and leisure activities with the goal of inspiring a lifelong connection to healthy living.

 

Healthy Living and Personal Fitness Activities - Live Fit PAF 2O / PAF 3O / PAF4O (Co-Ed) PAF 2OF / PAF 3OF (Female Only)

The focus will be an introduction to obtaining and maintaining independent personal fitness. Activities may include: aerobic running, tai chi, CrossFit, step aerobics, weight training and games of low organization.

 

Specialty Courses

These courses are open to all students in any grade level to participate in.

 

Functional Fitness PAI 2O - Intro to Functional Fitness / PAI 3O - Functional Fitness / PAI 40 - Advanced Functional Fitness (Co-Ed)

These courses involve constantly varied, functional movements done at a high intensity; generally a combination of Olympic lifting and gymnastics skills. These courses focus on improving all 10 elements of fitness and teaching the principles of training.

 

Hockey Focus Double Credit PAL 1O / PAI 1O (Co-Ed)

An introduction to the fundamental skills involved in hockey. This course has on ice sessions, dry-land training sessions and team-building games. This program is focused on individual player development and skating fundamentals.

Track & Field Focus PAL 2O (Co-Ed)

This course focuses on the strategy, fitness and skills required for track and field events. This program is focused on the development of fitness and playing ability through skill-specific training in track and field.

 

Basketball Focus PAL 3O (Co-Ed)

This course focuses on the strategy, fitness and skills required for the sport of basketball. This program is focused on the rules of the game and the development of fitness and playing ability through skill-specific training in basketball.

 

Volleyball Focus PAL 4O (Co-Ed)

This course focuses on the strategy, fitness and skills required for the sport of volleyball. This program is focused on the rules of the game and the development of fitness and playing ability through skill-specific training in volleyball.

 

Yoga and Pilates PAR 3O / PAR 4O (Co-Ed)

This course focuses on the study of yoga and Pilates techniques and movements. This program is focused on the development of fitness through the skills developed in yoga and Pilates practice.

 

Introductory Kinesiology PSK 4U

The course prepares students for university programs in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, health sciences and sports administration. This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual’s participation in physical activity.

Healthy Living and Outdoor Activities PAD 2O / PAD 3O (Co-Ed)

The Outdoor Recreation Program is designed to offer students the opportunity to experience physical activities from a more traditional recreational perspective, in natural settings. Students will participate in outdoor and recreational activities that will enhance both mental and physical well-being. Activities and in class learning include hiking, orienteering and Geocaching, snowshoeing, teambuilding games, outdoor food and nutrition.

 

 

Outdoor Education - 2 Credit Package Grade 12: Outdoor Activities and Living in a Sustainable World (Open and Workplace Stream) PAD 4O / CGR 4E (Co-Ed)

 

Students will receive the following two credits:

PAD 4O: Outdoor Activities. This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living outdoors through participation in a variety of sports and recreational activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Snowshoeing, winter camping, hiking, canoeing and rock climbing are some of the activities. Personal fitness, safety, environmental impact, team building, and cooperative learning will be emphasized throughout the course as well as focusing on the positive impacts of activities outside on mental health.

CGR 4E: Living in a Sustainable World. With a focus on learning outdoors, this course examines the impact of humans on the environment. Students will explore different types of outdoor settings and the impact of human decisions and choices on the environment. Students will apply concepts to learn about practical solutions to environmental issues, helping them to make more sustainable decisions at home, in the workplace, and in the local community.

 

 

Outdoor Leadership - 2 Credit Package Grade 12: Recreation Leadership and Resource Management (University and College Stream) PLF 4M / CGR 4M (Co-Ed)

The Outdoor Leadership Program is designed to offer students in the university / college pathway the opportunity to experience various activities and organized learning in a natural outdoor setting. Students will receive the following two credits:

 

PLF 4M: Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership. This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active outdoor recreation and healthy leisure and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize, and safely implement recreational events and other activities related to healthy, active living in an outdoor setting.

CGR 4M: The Environment and Resource Management. With a focus on application taking part in an outdoor setting, this course investigates interactions between natural and human systems, with an emphasis on the impacts of human activity on ecosystems and natural processes.
